itive feedback. This comes as no surprise considering the suc-
cess of their debut album ‘Better Weather’, and the band
harnessed the experience of that into the recording of ‘Love
And Loathing’. Jayden mentions that a lot of lessons from ‘Bet-
ter Weather’ had been taken into ‘Love And Loathing’, espe-
cially on the experience front. Jayden muses, “I think that
recording the first album was just one of those things, like we
didn’t really know how to write an album, you know? We’d only
written EPs with maximum five songs. So we were kind of just
writing songs, the best songs that we could, just trying to write
songs and eventually they came together and we were like, ‘Oh
cool, it kind of fits together’.”
With the problem of lack of experience now out of the way,
Jayden adds that working on the new album, “I would say we
knew what to expect a bit more, so instead of writing songs we
were writing an album. I think that was definitely one of the
things, and just being in the studio recording an album is so dif-
ferent to recording an EP; you’ve been there for a month and
you really get surrounded, and you dive into this world for a few
weeks and [you get] taken away from life. I think doing that and
experiencing that, we knew how to better face it on the second
album.”
This preparation also meant that the whole recording
process ended up being very smooth, with no unexpected sur-
prises along the way. Part of this is down to their working rela-
tionship with producer Mike Green, who knew what vision the
band had in mind. Jayden explains, “We recorded it [‘Love And
Loathing’] with Mike Green, who’s this guy in LA that’s done
some incredible stuff. He really knows how to handle the situa-
tion, so he’s a great mediator of this album. So having him
guide the process went really smoothly. We didn’t run out of
time at all. It was crazy.”
With so many people focused on making this album the
best it could be, it perhaps comes as no surprise that there
would be passionate discussions in the studio on how certain
songs should sound. As Jayden says, “Music is such an inter-
esting thing because you’ve got three people that all care so
much about this song, so everyone is coming from such a good
place because they want the best for the song, which you know,
sometimes you butt heads that way.” In the case of ‘Love And
Loathing’, the song that was argued over the most was ‘Icarus’,
one of their most different songs for both the band and in terms
of what fans are used to hearing. Jayden remembers, “Every-
one was taking it left and right, and trying to get out what felt
right and Inigo [guitarist] took more of the reigns on that one
because he’s the one that wrote that song. Looking back at it
now, I think it sounds great and I love how it turned out, but it’s
one of those things; in the moment, everyone just wants the
best for it, so it’s kind of hard to see in this vision in a box.”
And with such passion must come moments on the record
that stand out particularly to individuals. For Jayden, he has a
series of different moments he loves the most on the album.
One can be found in opening track ‘That Something’, where he
enjoys the carefree vocal parts, citing them as ‘a fun moment’.
Another one is closing track ‘Tails’, in particular the final few
moments of the track. Jayden gushes about it, saying, “I love
the end of ‘Tails’. It’s like a little acoustic moment at the end of
it, which for me was really important, because basically all it is
is this guy with a guitar in a room, playing some stuff, which is
where a lot of these songs started. So it felt appropriate to finish
the album where it started.”
ith the album’s focus on love and loathing, we asked
WJayden about the things he loves the most, and one
that quickly comes to mind is music. Jayden admits, “I don’t
know what I would do without music, it is like everything to me.”
The different parts of music all hold different appeal to Jayden,
with playing and creating holding very important parts. Jayden
declares, “Nothing will ever beat the satisfaction of sitting be-
hind a piano. Piano was my first instrument. To me, it’s the per-
fect instrument, it’s the perfect first one to learn and nothing
beats sitting behind a piano and just playing chords and getting
lost in the sound and creating something that didn’t previously
exist. So I want to say that, but then I also love touring and I
