The Way (F
he word wayward has many mean-
T ings. Wilful, headstrong, stubborn, re-
bellious, defiant and wild to name a few and
these are perhaps the most suited to describ-
ing British classic rockers Wayward Sons and
certainly their leader, Toby Jepson, some-
thing of a legend on the British rock scene
whose story stretches all the way back to the
mid-1980s and the Little Angels. His story has
added several chapters since, but he is hope-
ful this newest tale will be his final one and
based on their debut album, the hugely
promising ‘Ghosts Of Yet To Come’, it has the
potential to be the greatest as well.
WAYWARD SONS
he story behind Wayward Sons is a little unusual and starts
Twith an approach to Toby by Italian record label Frontiers to
create a solo album, but despite his most recent work being a solo
project, 2013’s ‘Raising My Own Hell’, he declined the offer and in-
stead elected to form Wayward Sons step by step. First came long-
time friend and bassist Nic Wastell from Chrome Molly, a band that
had been label mates for a while with Little Angels, and more recently
a band with whom Toby worked with as producer for their last two
albums. Then he switched his focus to some young blood and en-
listed Treason Kings guitarist Sam Wood, whose talents he spoke of
in the highest regards multiple times during their recent UK run
opening for Steel Panther. Next on his list was a drummer; Phil Mar-
tini was spotted by Toby performing with Joe Elliott and Down ‘N’
Outz at the High Voltage Festival. Finally came another longtime
friend in Dave Kemp, described on the band’s website as ‘Toby’s
wingman’. His addition on the keyboard completed the Sons.
Line-up complete, the band immediately made a mark in impres-
sive fashion with the release of four music videos from their debut
album: ‘Until The End’, ‘Alive’, ‘Crush’ and ‘Ghost’, the quartet of
videos being pieced together to make a mini film, ‘Ghosts Of Yet To
Come’, in which the band have to avoid, dodge and tackle a band of
bloodthirsty zombies.
