“I think that without hope you’re done,”
he replies. “I really believe that. Whatever
level in life you’re at… I’ve travelled a lot
and come from Mexico, I’ve found that
‘poverty-stricken people’, for lack of a better
label, they have to be the happiest people
on the planet. And part of the reason is be-
cause they’re not chasing the dollar, they’re
not chasing a better car, they’re not chasing
a better home, all they’re concerned about
is comfort and being happy today, this
minute, this hour and there’s something
very valuable there to be honest. I always
try and go and hang, when I have time off,
into the inner cities and hang out with the
‘people’. And at the same time it makes me
appreciate where I’m at, where I live, so it’s
all relevant, y’know. But yeah, the short an-
swer would be, yes, we all need hope and I
think without hope you’re done.”
n ‘Long Way To Go’, John sings ‘say
Iwhat you will, do what you want’. We
end by asking Marco if he thinks that the
best way to succeed and be happy in life is
to say and do what you want?
“Absolutely, absolutely,” he replies. “You
have to believe in what you’re doing first be-
fore anyone can even take notice. Confi-
dence is very attractive to me, I don’t know
if it is to you, but to me, safe to say, that for
the majority of people, when you see some-
one walk in the room, not only the physical
beauty but the confidence, who they are,
you can see their aura, you can feel the
light, they’ve got something, they’ve got a
message, they’ve got something to offer, I
love that. And as musicians, as entertainers,
‘cause we are, it’s really cool when you’re in
that space. Whether it’s good or wrong or
whatever, people appreciate it. They might
not agree with you but they go, “wow, that
was cool, I love that!” (claps) “Look at him,
he’s on fire!” I love it. So yeah, say what you
will, do what you want, and there’s nobody
to blame, just you”.
Marco Mendoza has definitely made the
best with his life – coming from a dark place,
and turning his life around, into now some-
thing wonderful. He may be to blame for his
earlier choices, but he managed to right
those wrongs and turn into the best version
of himself that he could possibly be. Make
some noise for Marco!
Marco Mendoza will be back in the UK
in February for a solo tour, while The Dead
Daisies have already been confirmed for
Download Festival in June. Visit www.mar-
