WITH CONFIDENCE / STORY UNTOLD / ANAVAE - LONDON GARAGE, 22.09.18
It may have been raining all day, but that did not stop the massive queues from forming for With Confidence as they prepare to take on London.
Fans huddle under shared umbrellas, eagerly waiting to see the Australian pop-punk trio, and once inside, there’s a tangible buzz in the air as excited
chatter fills the air inside the venue.
Opening up the evening is London duo Anavae, formed of Rebecca Need-Menear and Jamie Finch. On this particular occasion, they bring a drum-
mer with them, temporarily playing as a trio for the night. As the lights dim to mark the start of the evening, loud cheers fill the room as Rebecca and
Jamie take their places on stage, facing each other in a way that bears resemblance to a stand-off. Striking the drums that are placed in front of them,
it was a dramatic beginning to the evening as the lighting matches the thunderous sounds circling around the room. Throughout their set, Rebecca’s
powerful voice soars over the crowd, especially during tracks such as the thrilling ‘All Or Nothing’ and the impassioned ‘Are We Alone?’
It’s everyone’s first time seeing
Canadian pop-punkers Story Untold in
London this evening, and it appears that
many fans have waited a long time for
this moment as they crowd around the
barrier, eager to get a good spot to
watch their set. Holding flowers and
flags, the band has built up a dedicated
fanbase and this can be reflected in the
loud singalongs throughout their set. Be-
ginning with ‘In Or Out’, the energetic
mood of the song persists for the rest of
the evening as both the band and fans
jump around. Meanwhile, the band’s
pop-punk medley garners one of the
loudest singalongs of the evening, as
they cover a plethora of emo classics
plucked from the discographies of Fall
Out Boy, All Time Low, Sleeping With
Sirens and the likes. Janick Thibault ex-
presses the band’s amazement at being
in London, saying, “This is so fucking
cool. I’m just like, fascinated, just by
hearing you guys talk. It’s amazing” be-
fore jumping into ‘Matches In The
Ocean’, and finally the catchy ‘Delete’ to
round off a blood-pumping set.
As the first chords of ‘That Some-
thing’ hit the room, it’s the beginning of
an energetic set by With Confidence as
the first crowdsurfers start coming over
the barrier. Their new record ‘Love And
Loathing’ certainly translates well live,
with fans screaming back every word
with as much zest as the band delivers
them. Continuing with ‘Keeper’, it’s a
passionate performance as the song
tackles themes of not being ok, and with
electrifying guitar work and a pum-
melling drum backbone, you’ll be sure to
feel all of the emotion flowing through
your veins. Delivering a diverse set of
songs, the band treat us from material
from their second EP in the form of the
heart-tugging ‘Godzilla’ through to mul-
tiple tracks off ‘Love And Loathing’, cre-
ating a wide mix of music for the fans to
enjoy. As the last notes of ‘Here For
Nothing’ fade away, the band strip back
the pace to deliver an acoustic set for
the poignant ‘Long Night’, and it’s a ten-
der moment as phone flashlights alight
the room around Jayden and his
acoustic guitar. Following with ‘Pâ-
querette’, you can feel your heart mend-
ing itself as the band pour their heart
and soul into an acoustic hybrid
arrangement of the track, and as a hazy
pink lighting settles over the room, it per-
fectly matches the mood of the track.
Encoring with ‘Voldemort’ and ‘Icarus’, it
leaves the night on a high, and we have
no doubt that it’s all better weather from
here onwards.
