                 Taking The Crown

f you never try then you never know’ is a lyric taken from the latest single by Aus-
Itralian rockers The Faim, ‘Summer Is A Curse’, and it neatly sums up the band’s men-
tality. With a drive and passion that sees them constantly striving to be better and reach
for the top, The Faim are definitely a band to keep your eye on as they take the world by
storm. Having recently completed their first tour, Black Velvet caught up with the band to
take a look at how they are slowly taking the crown and what they have learnt on the jour-
              ney so far.

resh from completing tours with Lower Than Atlantis and
FSleeping With Sirens, with festivals such as Download
and Reading and Leeds hot on their heels, vocalist Josh Raven
reflects that the whole band were all a little nervous about their
first ever UK tour. “We were just hoping that the shows would go
well,” says Josh. “We weren’t expecting any big crowds or any
real interaction from the other bands or anything, and our expec-
tations were blown out of the water. Lower Than Atlantis were
such amazing dudes; really welcoming, a lot of fun. They’re just
Aussies with different accents… The shows were amazing as
well - the fans have been so good to us, so welcoming. Every
show we were at the merch desk, just meeting new people, and
everyone was really into what we were doing…in retrospect,
we’re excited more than anything, and it honestly could not have
gone better.” Commenting further on the tour, Josh muses, “It’s
been a whole range of different experiences. Obviously being
around each other all the time is very different, but we’ve all
grown a lot closer from that.”
Aside from this being their first tour, it has also marked the
band meeting a lot of new people for the first time, including
bands like Boston Manor, Milk Teeth, and Lower Than Atlantis.
“Getting to know different people for the first time was an incred-
ibly rewarding experience,” mentions Josh, “but I think the
biggest thing we’ve taken out of all of it is playing different types
of shows to different ages and different groups of people, and
really finding ourselves amongst all these different cultures and
different influences, which is really, really good for us.”
short while ago, we spotted Josh writing on Instagram ‘I
Afeel like I’m growing into a person I can be proud of’, so
we asked him what sort of person he wants to grow into and how
the tour has helped him grow. Instead of growing into something
different, Josh answers that he doesn’t really want to change.
“The biggest thing about my perspective on myself is that I want
to keep my humanity and my humility no matter how far this goes
or whatever really happens. I think that’s the most important part
for any musician or any person. This tour has helped that more
than anything. Being around people like Lower Than Atlantis who
are genuine music lovers and hard workers and who really love
what they do, it was really lucky for us.”
Josh constantly sends out positivity on social media, such
as when he wrote ‘Sending infinite love to every single one of
you’. Josh says that it is all authentic. “When I put myself on so-
cial media, I don’t try to pretend to be something I’m not so peo-
ple don’t get false expectations…they’re not set up to have this
different idea. I think that’s the biggest thing; when you put your-
self on social media, you don’t want people to be getting false
              expectations.”
One of the band’s main aims is to create a tight-knit commu-
nity between fans, and drummer Sean Tighe explains the signif-
icance of this sense of community, which develops into his
passion for shows. “That’s what I love about shows in general,
because everybody in that room, wherever we are, is suffering
from anything; either a loss of someone or depression, anxiety,
just absolutely anything. The greatest thing about a show is
when we’re playing, every single person is just in an absolute
moment of bliss. All that just washes away, so that’s our core
message. Our message is to get everybody to be the best they
