The Best Of The Best
The Best Of The Best
he best of the best don’t need no fame’, sings Tyler Connolly of Theory Of A Dead-
‘Tman on ‘G.O.A.T’, an inspiring song from the band’s new album, ‘Wake Up Call’.
Theory Of A Deadman rose to fame with songs such as ‘Bad Girlfriend’ and ‘Hate My Life’,
and are now back with their sixth studio album, taking a look at other people’s lives as
well as their own. They have fun, they get serious - and then they inspire. And while Tyler
himself doesn’t aspire to be the best of the best, he and his bandmates, Dave Brenner,
Dean Back and Joey Dandeneau are definitely doing something right.
e? No, I like being the behind the scenes guy,”
“Mfrontman Tyler replies when Black Velvet asks
if he’s ever wanted to be the greatest of all time, as in the
song, ‘G.O.A.T’. “I don’t know about being the greatest of
all time. It’s funny, I don’t even know what that song’s
about. I think I was just interested in writing an inspira-
tional song. Our A&R guy was like, “Is it about Muhammad
Ali? What’s the song about?” And I actually couldn’t tell
you. I like it because it inspires you. The song can be used
for so many different things. As for being the greatest of
all time… I don’t know, man! I’m a guy that’s kind of behind
the curtain hiding.”
Tyler thinks the best kind of people are those that help
others. “We tend to idolize people who are famous even if
they are for the wrong reasons, which is kind of silly. What-
ever helps you, that’s fine, but at the end of the day, the
people that really are the best of the best are people that
try and help us through our lives but aren’t looking to be-
come famous on Instagram. Maybe they’re doctors work-
ing at St. Jude’s or something, and people that have
actually gone to college for ten years to save people’s
lives. Maybe those are the true heroes, and those are the
best of the best.”
Despite not thinking that he is the best, he does think
that new album, ‘Wake Up Call’, could be Theory’s best
piece of work. “I will say that out of all our records… it’s
our sixth record… I think I’m the most excited. I don’t think
I’ve ever been this adamant about the direction and the
songs and the songwriting as any other record. Other
records we’ve had favourite songs, but this record, I don’t
know, from the get-go, I’ve been really, really driving this
home… The band loves it. We’re really, really happy with
how it turned out. Now it’s on to the fans.”
hile ‘G.O.A.T.’ will inspire others with lyrics such
Was ‘Ya trained for this since the day you were
born, full of pain, full of sweat, full of tears, but never giv-
ing up, or giving into the fear’, Tyler says that he looks to
himself when he needs encouragement.
“I have friends that motivate me, but I’ve always been
a bit of a loner,” he reveals. “I always found that I always
needed encouragement, but I’ve always been my biggest
support, where I always found it’s always been me moti-
vating me and encouraging me to do different things or try
to do things. I’m single, so I don’t have the support system,
where usually you have a wife or girlfriend, or close family,
where you can bounce ideas off them, so for me, it’s al-
ways kind of been me, which is odd.”
Some people may not envisage the frontman of a band
that tours the world with a band and crew, standing on
stage in front of thousands of fans every night being a
loner, but Tyler says he is. And on ‘Wake Up Call’ he has
even written a song of that title. And this song, also, will
