THE DEAD DAISIES / INGLORIOUS – WOLVERHAMPTON SLADE ROOMS, 26.07.16
Ten days prior to their ‘Make
Some Noise’ album release, The
Dead Daisies hit Wolverhampton for
a headline show following an ap-
pearance at Ramblin’ Man Fair in
Kent. It’s no surprise that the show
sold out quickly. UK rockers Inglori-
ous head on stage at 8pm and im-
press the crowd with their soulful
classic rock. It’s frontman Nathan
James’ birthday so he’s in fine spir-
its. When he mentions this fact, the
crowd sing ‘Happy Birthday’ to him.
The band’s set includes tracks from
their self-titled debut album includ-
ing the gutsy ‘High Flying Gypsy’,
the heart-shredding ‘Bleed For You’
and the Motown-influenced ‘Holy
Water’. Nathan’s vocals twist and
turn like a rollercoaster, his range is
electrifying and the band’s music
plus Nathan’s vocals are a winning
combination. If you’re a fan of
bluesy classic rock, these guys are
for you.
The Dead Daisies rock from the
moment they walk on stage. They
play a large number of songs from
their new ‘Make Some Noise’
album, which is not out at the time
of the gig – but as we’d already
been sent a copy and adore it, we’re
very happy about that. Songs such
as the title track, ‘Fortunate Son’,
single ‘Long Way To Go’ and ‘Song
And A Prayer’ sound as spectacular
live as they do on disc. The band
have really upped the level with this
new album. It surpasses their previ-
ous work and has a harder, catchier
and more current rock sound. New
guitarist Doug Aldrich fits perfectly
into the band – which also com-
prises of John Corabi, Marco Men-
doza, David Lowy and Brian Tichy.
The stage is small so there’s not a
huge amount of space for them to
stretch their legs – and the ceiling is
too low for Brian to properly throw
his drumsticks up and catch them
again – but at the same time, it’s
awesome to see such high calibre
musicians playing kick ass rock and
roll in such a small, intimate envi-
ronment. Marco walks off the stage
and round into the photopit at one
point, while Brian gets to show his
talents in a drum solo. The band in-
clude various covers in their set in-
cluding ‘Join Together’ (by The
Who), which is also on the new
album, and Free’s ‘All Right Now’.
The faster, punkier ‘Mainline’ packs
a punch, while they round the set off
with The Beatles’ ‘Helter Skelter’
(which sees John Corabi walking
along the front row barrier singing to
the crowd) before returning for an
encore that ends with a cover of
Deep Purple’s ‘Hush’. The Dead
Daisies are a band that we don’t
want to hush though – and look for-
ward to seeing again when they re-
turn in November. Get to a show!
