THE SUMMER SET – BIRMINGHAM ASYLUM, 19.11.23
When The Summer Set went on hiatus in 2017, our hearts dropped a little. Thinking that they may never perform or visit the UK again was sad.
So, when the band got back together and released a new album, we were delighted, and now, they’re finally back in the UK for a full-on, eight-date
tour.
And the long-awaited tour was even better than we could have imagined. For starters, it consisted of approximately 23 songs, which, on its own,
is bang for the buck. Opening with the intro from their new 2022-released ‘Blossom’ album, ‘The Color Of Everything’, the band soon dive into the first
real song, ‘Street Lightning’, a track with a gorgeous, delectable feel, pulsing with addictive hooks that immediately gets the crowd dancing. But, through
the night, they switch things up and delve into their whole music catalogue. ‘The Boys You Do (Get Back At You)’ comes hurtling into the set like a
party animal from 2009, before 2013’s ‘Jukebox (Life Goes On)’ invites the audience to sing along. All of the band’s tunes instantly lift your mood.
A fan yells out ‘Happy
Birthday’. It’s frontman Brian
Logan Dales’ birthday and
he says there’s nowhere
he’d rather be than playing
for us. “The setlist down
here has a bunch of pictures
of my face on it. Thanks
Jess Bowen on drums,”
Brian says. It’s just the first
of the surprises for his birth-
day, as the band later bring
out a cake for him, put on
party hats and get Brian to
blow the candles out on the
cake.
