THE ROCKET SUMMER / FARRO / JET BLACK ALLEY CAT – NASHVILLE EXIT/IN, 18.03.16
Bryce Avary, AKA The Rocket Summer, has been away from the live circuit, writing and recording new album, ‘Zoetic’. Now, with its release, it’s
all systems go again. Tonight we’re in Nashville where local band Jet Black Alley Cat kick off the show. Frontman Joe Wilkinson has a Michael
Jackson dress-style to him; however, musically they have a mellow indie ambience with funk-toned bass, a vintage style in places and loungey
guitar. They’ve only been a band for a year and a half and while they’re good at what they do, their music is a little too laid back. We’d like something
that shakes us up a bit more.
We’re excited to see Farro as we haven’t seen Josh Farro since he left Paramore in 2010. Josh is the frontman and guitarist of Farro. His
project is quite mellow, indie and synth-driven; very different to Paramore. Josh has a soft singing voice and songs like ‘Lose You’ are quite atmos-
pheric and almost New Romantic in style. His set features songs from his debut album, ‘Walkways’ and he gets a big cheer at the end. Being from
Nashville he has a lot of support in the house.

We’re all here to
see The Rocket Sum-
mer though and eager
for Bryce to take to the
stage. Bryce definitely
gives fans their
money’s worth with an
hour and half headline
set featuring a range of
songs from his whole
career. He begins with
‘So, In This Hour…’
from his 2007-released
‘Do You Feel’ album,
before fast forwarding
to new album ‘Zoetic’
for ‘Cold War’. Bryce
switches between gui-
tar and keys at the
same time as singing
until later in the set
when he plays drums,
bass and even beat-
box. Bryce always
makes his sets inter-
esting and ventures
into the audience for
an acoustic rendition of
‘Roses’, in which the
crowd sing the chorus.
Old favourite, ‘Brat
Pack’, sees confetti un-
expectedly bursting
over the audience,
while ‘Walls’ includes
Bryce’s looped beat-
box as the foundation.
There’s a packed en-
core that includes a
medley of ‘Never
Knew’, ‘Around The
Clock’ and ‘200,000’
(with loud claps from
the audience) and
ends with ‘Revival’ and
‘So Much Love’. Bryce
puts so much of him-
self into his show and
the audience sing word
for word, crowding the
stage like disciples. It’s
always a pleasure to
see a Rocket Summer
show, and hopefully
next time it’ll be in the
UK.
