“LOOK THEM IN THE EYE,
“LOOK THEM IN THE EYE,
TELL THEM ‘I’M SORRY’.”
TELL THEM ‘I’M SORRY’.”
years ago, your trusted Black Velvet editor became vegan. After doing an inter-
20view with a vegan musician (Tyler Rann of New Jersey pop-punkers Midtown),
we were inspired to take the leap in order to do a bit more to help animals. As an animal
lover, I knew I didn’t want to contribute to animal cruelty. I knew I had to do more than just
being vegetarian.
Fast forward 20 years, now we’re here celebrating our 20-year vegan anniversary (or
veganniversary, if you will) and what better way to celebrate than to interview another
vegan, one that has been vegan even longer. Alissa White-Gluz, vocalist of Arch Enemy,
whose 11th studio album ‘Deceivers’ was released a few months ago, has not just been
vegan for well over 20 years, but she was vegetarian since birth. Armed with questions in-
spired by the band’s lyrics, Black Velvet chats to the intelligent frontwoman, and finds out
what made Alissa herself initially make the jump to veganism, what her thoughts are on
vigils, what makes a person cause pain and sorrow, and if she thinks there will ever be a
time when all life is valued.
