This issue we’ve got the most amount of British 04 A MUSICAL NOTE FROM...
bands an issue of Black Velvet probably has ever had. So
many great British bands have released albums already 05 THE BRINK
this year. I interviewed Josh of You Me At Six, who 06 DANNY WORSNOP
released ‘Night People’ on 6th January; Austin of As
Lions, who released their debut album, ‘Selfish Age’, on 08 FAREWELL, MY LOVE
January 20th; Sam of Mallory Knox, who released ‘Wired’ 12 CAROUSEL KINGS
on March 1st; and Tom of Deaf Havana, who released ‘All
These Countless Nights’ on January 27th. We’ve also got 16 YOU ME AT SIX
a Q&A with The Brink, a great Cambridgeshire/Sheffield 20 CANDLEBOX
band that we recently discovered. But we’ve also got
artists from the USA and Canada, who have also released 24 MALLORY KNOX
some top class albums over the last couple of months 28 DEAF HAVANA
too. We haven’t heard this many great new albums in a
long time. Rock music seems to be thriving at the 33 FANSITE FOCUS
moment, at least as far as inspiration goes. The very first 34 SUMO CYCO
album we listened to at the beginning of January 2017
was Carousel Kings’. It really impressed us. And for the 38 AS LIONS
last couple of months we have kept on being impressed. 41 ALBUMS
It was a quiet January and February for us, gig-wise
(although I did take a trip to the U.S, where I caught Bon 44 DVDS
Jovi and Andy Black), but things quickly picked up speed 45 BV CV / SUPERSONIC FS
in March - right at Black Velvet deadline! We had four
gigs in four days, right when the issue was due online - 46 CONCERTS
so I held this issue back a few days to fit them in. I met
up with Black Velvet album reviewer Clare Huckett for the
Black Star Riders show. It was the first time we had actu-
ally met since she started writing for Black Velvet about a A Bit O’ Twitter
decade ago! Hopefully it won’t be another ten years
before we meet again. Clare actually wrote the Black Star
Riders review, to give me a rest in between the three oth- Words of Wisdom (or otherwise) from Twitter.
ers I wrote during that four-gig span, and all the photo
editing. Chris Burney (Bowling For Soup) @SoupBowlerChris
We were sad to hear of the loss of ex-band manager ‘How do you nicely tell someone that their perfume is killing you?’
Gary Raymond recently (along with the loss of Chuck
Berry and others). It was only recently that we had Zach Myers (Shinedown) @ZMyersOfficial
reviewed Gary’s book, ‘Blag, Steal & Borrow’ and fea- ‘"Get off Twitter and Facebook ya douche .... " - Me .... To myself. 5
tured him in our BV CV section. RIP Gary. We dedicate times a day.’
this issue to Gary.

Y & velvet kisses ‘Finding yourself being sick in a New York train toilet at 10:45am is
very sobering. Realising that you kneeled in someone else's puke is

James Gillett (Mallory Knox) @JamesKn0x
’Nowadays I like to stay up until that point in the night where every-
thing is just fucking hilarious.’
Mark Hoppus (Blink-182) @markhoppus
’If any obstacle ever seems insurmountable, just remember, a 1,000-
mile journey begins by simply walking the first 999 miles.’
