BOY JUMPS SHIP / LTNT / AREA 52 – LONDON CAMDEN BARFLY, 10.05.16
When the first band of the night walk
onto the stage, we’re surprised at how
young they are. As they kick-start their set,
we’re taken aback with vocalist Rose Yag-
mur, who has a unique vocal styling that is
effortlessly captivating. Their sound is pure
mellifluous indie rock, with catchy hooks
and awe-inspiring musicianship through-
out. Area 52 are undeniably the dark horse
of the night, showing an incredible amount
of promise for a band so new to the scene.
Next up are alternative rock three-
piece LTNT. They’re chaotic, loud and in-
your-face with raw vocals and raucous
riffs. They power through their support slot
with high adrenaline, with vocalist Liam
Lever taking his performance into the
crowd, screaming lyrics into the faces of
unexpecting audience members and
swinging his mic around. Their grungey alt
rock sound and hard-hitting, energetic set
are nothing but impressive.
Storming onto the stage with high en-
ergy and even higher spirits, Boy Jumps
Ship launch into single ‘Lost & Found', fill-
ing the room with melodious riffs and
angst. Si’s powerful vocals stand out,
bringing their debut album, ‘Wake Up’, to
life right in front of you. It’s a Tuesday night
and the room is by no means sold out, but
that doesn’t stop them, as it’s clear that
they’re putting everything they’ve got into
their performance. ‘Turn Up The Radio’
gets the crowd going with its catchy lyrics
and hooks that you’ll find yourself hum-
ming along to days after the gig. Gav
Gates on drums is a powerhouse in the
middle of the stage, drawing all eyes on
him with his cheerful stage presence and
oozing charisma.
They press pause on the madness for
a quiet moment with ‘Night Stories’, a
beautiful stripped-down tune that pulls at
your heartstrings and makes you feel like
you’re the only person in the room. Every
song sounds ridiculously tight and profes-
sional for a band at this stage of their ca-
reer, and it’s clear to see why Boy Jumps
Ship have such a good live reputation.
Penultimate song ‘Burn’ is the best mo-
ment of the night, with a wave of energy
rushing over the crowd as the band chug
out hard-hitting riffs and that impossibly
catchy chorus that made the song a hit.
The set is short but sweet, and there cer-
tainly isn’t a dull moment — we can’t wait
to see what Boy Jumps Ship do next.
