Springtime 2022 meant another couple of animal sanctuary visits outside of
Black Velvet work. We went to support Hillfields Animal Sanctuary the week before
Easter, as they held an open day to raise funds for their animals. Hillfields Animal
Sanctuary is located in Blackwell, near Bromsgrove, in Worcestershire and was
founded by Linda Tudor. Hillfields is home to goats, sheep, ponies, turkeys, pigs,
chickens, ducks, geese and more. The sanctuary was founded over 40 years ago,
and all of the animals have been rescued from cruelty, all getting to live out their
days at their forever home.
A couple of times a year, Hillfields opens its gates for an open day. The first
one this year cost £8 entry, but included vegan hot dogs, doughnuts, cupcakes and
drinks (juice, tea, etc). A fantastic spread was put on with more food than we could
imagine, including crisps, popcorn, apple pies and fruit. You can meet the animals,
though some were in their barns with the gates closed, mostly those with horns, to
avoid any of them headbutting anyone!
The pigs were walking around. Honey, in particular, loved having her belly
rubbed and being stroked. She came over to greet us when we entered. Tyler the
goat was wondering why we didn’t bring food. Linda also showed us an ill goat that
was being looked after in one of the sheds with a red light over it.
The open day included a raffle and a couple of stalls with various items such
as jewellery and bric-a-brac for sale.
